“Spiritual leadership is the power to change the atmosphere by one’s presence.” — J. Oswald Sanders
I’ve always been fascinated by the idea that our presence can change a room — that leadership isn’t just about what we do, but about the atmosphere we create.
A colleague once shared a reflection that stayed with me:
“You have a calm and stillness about you that felt like a tranquil pond.”
I took it as a reminder that stillness — in any of us — can invite calm and connection in others. It deepened my awareness of the agency we have: the way our presence alone can shape the tone and quality of a group’s interaction.
Presence begins when we notice how our being — not just our doing — shapes the space around us. Our ability to connect, to offer comfort, and to ask questions that invite reflection all help create safety and community.
Reflection for you:
How do you experience your own presence?
When have you felt the energy in a room shift because of how you showed up?
Practice for the week:
Notice how your body responds right before you speak — that’s presence in action.
If you’re interested in improving your ability to change the atmosphere or to have more impact – or helping your team engage in conversations that matter – let’s talk.
