When you experience a setback—whether it’s not meeting a goal, saying something you wish you hadn’t or missing an opportunity—how do you tend to process and respond?
After watching the thrilling Wimbledon final, I was eager to hear the post-match interview with Carlos Alcaraz who was defeated by his rival and friend, Jannik Sinner. Anyone who champions a Growth Mindset would cringe at the press’s choice to title the interview, “What went wrong.” Talk about a textbook Fixed Mindset frame!
Alcaraz had a brilliant response, which exemplified a Growth Mindset. Here’s the twist:
“I just left the court with my head really high because you know that I just did everything that I could today. I played against someone who played an unbelievable game. It was difficult to serve better, so I just have to improve that. I’m just happy. I’m smiling because in my head it was about playing the final and being grateful for that.”
Wow! What an inspiring framing! He’s at the beginning of his career and he has already developed this mindset!
This is a recurring theme in my coaching conversations; Can’t wait to use this in a session.
How will you use this framing in your work?
