What part of your true capacity is still hidden in the stone?

Did you feel seen when you were younger? Was there someone who “saw” you and your potential – and did they help promote or develop you?

I was moved recently by a story told by Prof. Robert Reich, who was bullied by his classmates for being very short – while his 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Alice Camp, saw potential in him and made him feel special. She fed him books and also praised his drawings and writings.

And he became U.S. Secretary of Labor! 😊

So I got to wondering, “who has seen me in my life?”

I’ve always had a sense of my unique gifts, even if they weren’t entirely fleshed out – and that was part of my professional growth: I grew into the person that I am now.

I feel like the clay that Michelangelo worked with, according to the anecdote attributed to him: that a sculpture already exists within a block of stone or clay, and the sculptor’s job is to remove the excess material to reveal the perfect form hidden inside.

I feel like that hidden form emerged over time.

So I get emergence – and that gives me a soft spot for people who talk about “not feeling seen”.
